Title: The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs!
Author: John Scieszka
Illustrator: Lane Smith
Publisher: The Penguin Group
Publication Date: 1989
ISBN: 978-0-14-054451-0
Summary: This story is based on the original story of the three little pigs. It is told from the wolf's perspective. In his story, the wolf mentions that he just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar in order to bake a cake with his granny. Wolf visited his neighbor who had a house made out of straws, but unfortunately knocked down the house with a sneeze due to a cold. The stick house of the second pig did not go well, as the wolf kept sneezing. The third pig, who lived in a brick house insulted the wolf's granny, which made the wolf angry that he was banging on the door just as the police drive up. Once the news reporter got a hold of the story of the arrested wolf, they blew the story up and decided to frame him as the big bad wolf.
Personal Statement: The story line in this book is fantastic! As I was reading this book, I found myself laughing the entire time because I have read the story from the pigs point of view, therefore reading it from the wolf's point of view made the story humorous. This is one of the books that I received as a Christmas present and I had mixed feelings about it. After reading this book, I think that readers will greatly appreciate this book because it is interesting and the story line is different than what is expected.

Ricardo,
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite versions of this traditional tale. The fact that it is told from the wolf's perspective makes reading it funny and interesting. This is also a book that can be used to teach point of view and empathy to students. How would you feel if you were the wolf and no one ever knew your side of the story? Great recommendation!
This is a fantastic book! I love using this book as an example during a unit on Persuasive Writing since the wolf is trying to persuade the reader. Love the humor and wit that Scieszka includes in all of his works too. Did you know that he has a website called Guys Read? It is recommendations for books by guys to guys. As a teacher he realized the importance of trying to get more male students to read, so the website is full of great resources. Certainly something to know about as a future teacher.
